What I Learned About Scholarly Research

 There were many things I learned from Laura about scholarly research during our class in the library this week. First, I learned exactly what an academic research paper is. I thought it was interesting that in order to be an academic journal article, they have to perform their own research because that was never a distinction my high school teachers made.

Another thing I learned from our library class this week was that we can take our topic and expand it in a lot of different ways and connect those ideas through a mind map. This is something I'm going to attempt with my own rational argument because I think it will help me fully research my problematic question.

Finally, I learned that one of the most crucial parts to an academic journal article is that it's been peer reviewed. I knew that peer reviewing academic articles is a very important part of the process, but I never knew how many times articles are reviewed, or by how many people they need to be reviewed by.

Rational Argument

 I feel like my rational argument went really well. At first, I struggled to add adjectives and adverbs, but I think my revision includes a lot of good information mixed with signal phrases. My question focused on how primary school age children's reading abilities were impacted by the pandemic. I was shocked by severity of the information I found.  I really enjoyed how this assignment led me to question beyond just my original viewpoint. I figured that the pandemic had impacted reading abilities, but I didn't expect the impacts to stretch to oral reading fluency, or that the e-learning may have been more impactful than the pandemic itself.

Planning Family Events

      This year, I've taken on a lot more responsibility in my family regarding events. From Easter, to Christmas, I've had to manage communication, decorating, and hosting. This is very stressful, especially in a family where not everyone gets along. With some aunts and uncles passionately defending their opinions, alongside others that will quietly stew if their unspoken expectations are not met. This has led me to think about the consequences of being the head of a family.     Something I'm already struggling with as my pseudo matriarch position becomes more and more demanding, is that being the head of a family means hours and hours of phone calls and texts. Everyone in the family looks to the head as the person with all the answers, even if that person doesn't actually have any answers for them. My Kid Could Paint That

       A specific scene that really moved me was when Marla's Mom was discussing how her husband, Marla's father, loved the attention his daughter was getting and how he saw no negatives. She disagreed with him on this issue, and often questioned her decision to make Marla such a public figure. This scene perplexed me, because I can see both sides of the issue. On one hand, the exposure and money Marla was generating could pay for Marla's, and possibly her younger brother's, future in a way that the family wouldn't be able to supply without the additional income. On the other hand, Marla is seen numerous times throughout the documentary, seeming uncomfortable in her public appearances. She also is a minor and therefore cannot consent to the interviews, news coverage, or even this documentary.
